Coming together to advance biodiversity preservation

“With science at its core and our transcendent moral obligation to the rest of life at its heart, the Half-Earth Project is working to conserve half the land and sea to safeguard the bulk of biodiversity, including ourselves.”

— E.O. Wilson

What is biodiversity?

“Biodiversity is the totality of all inherited variation in the life forms of Earth, of which we are one species. We study and save it to our great benefit. We ignore and degrade it to our great peril.” —E.O. Wilson

Biological diversity, or biodiversity for short, is essentially what many people think of as nature. In more technical terms, biodiversity is the complexity of all life on Earth, at all levels of organization.

Explore our story collection ‘A Shared Life’

This collection of stories offers perspectives of partnership with the rest of life, along with an introduction to the scientific tools we can use to turn the biodiversity crisis around. Enjoy these stories of Vermonters, and how their lives interweave with the natural world we are all a part of. Don’t forget to check out the accompanying booklet: A Vermonter's Guide for Protecting Biodiversity to restore, enhance, and protect biodiversity in your yard, town, or state.

“There is no solution available, I assure you, to save Earth's biodiversity other than the preservation of natural environments in reserves large enough to maintain wild populations sustainably. Only Nature can serve as the planetary ark.”

— E.O. Wilson
